As an expat living abroad, I use the local currency (e.g., bolivares (Bs)) for purchases but receive my salary in my native currency (e.g., Rands, sometimes USD).
I’d like to track how much each purchase costs in my native currency, ideally per item on receipts.
I propose a feature for Expensify’s SmartScan to:
a. Extract itemized details from receipts, including each item’s cost in the local currency.
b. Automatically convert each item’s cost to a user-specified native currency using real-time or customizable exchange rates.
c. Display both local and native currency amounts per item in the app and expense reports.
d. Allow users to set a “native currency” in their profile for automatic conversions.
Use Case: This would help expats and international travelers track spending in their native currency without manual conversions, improving budgeting and reimbursement accuracy. For example, a Bs.700,00 coffee and Bs.1,400,00 lunch in Venezuela show as ~$11 and ~$22 in USD per item, based on the exchange rate.
Benefits:
Simplifies expense tracking for multi-currency users.
Enhances reporting for personal budgeting or employer reimbursements.
Reduces manual work and errors in currency conversions.
Please consider adding this feature to make Expensify even more valuable for global users. Baie Dankie!
