Oops. I just learned that “view summary" has a monthly, quarterly, yearly filter. It's not quite the same as custom fields or categories, but better than my last comment meantioned.

I agree. I think allowing the “view summary” option had the ability to choose a time span instead of only month per month would fix this. This would be an awesome update!
